Why Enroll in a Music School that Focuses on Playing by Ear?

There are a lot of music schools these days that offer courses that allow you to learn music fast and easy. Most of these courses are different from the traditional programs that are linear in the sense that they teach you the theory first before doing hands-on practice. Sure, these courses help in building a deeper appreciation for music, but not all of them are created equal. Hence, if you are eager to learn to play an instrument, or sing in tune in a more efficient manner, then you have to be selective with the course and school you intend to enroll in.

A key tip: find a music school that focuses on playing by ear.

But why such school? Below are the reasons to do so:

  1. Learning to play by ear targets your innate musical abilities.

Everyone has an innate ability to play music, but some have developed this earlier and faster compared to others. By learning to play by ear, you are able to tap on your natural musical inclinations and hone them directly, rather than understanding the theory beforehand. You can then practice at your own pace and style since you are able to identify notes and melodies without the need of looking into the books and manuals first.

  1. Playing by ear directly targets mind-body coordination skills.

Music is developed through practice, and it requires mind-body coordination. It takes more time, however, when you opt for traditional learning, as musical lessons are taught piece by piece before they are put to practice.

Learning to play by ear on the other hand aims to develop mind-body coordination immediately, as your mind is triggered by the musical sounds and these are then executed either by singing or playing an instrument. In essence, your ability to coordinate your movements when playing music is a top priority when playing by ear.

  1. You get to maximize your learning time.

Unlike going through the traditional “theory-then-practice” approach, courses that focus on playing by ear are more economical in terms of time and effort spent. This is because the lessons are more direct and you get to apply them right away during practice. This is the best route to go especially when you need to learn how to play an instrument within a short period of time. Some courses last only for a few weeks, and by then you are already skilled instrumentalist or singer.

  1. Playing by ear gives you more room to explore your music abilities.

The best thing about learning to play by ear is that you are given the free space to explore your capacities. You are not bound to playing certain pieces for practice, and that you may pick whatever song in any genre you like. This is because playing by ear tests your auditory capacities. Being able to play the songs you’ve chosen and improvise ways to improve their quality means that you have indeed imbibed the lessons you’ve learned during the course, and that you ultimately utilized your innate talent in music.
